Casio MTP-1370L

This Casio is difficult to find, and in many countries it doesn't even show up on the official Casio website. I would however suggest that you keep one eye looking for one of these at all times. Because this little day/date might actually be the very best value watch on the market. It’s not perfect, though. Keep reading to find out why.

Casio MTP-1370L

DESIGN

The 1370L looks damn good. It’s wonderfully understated, while immediately catching the eye of the keen watch-nerd. There’s something about that full week of the day indicator at twelve that oozes luxury. Something Casios are not generally known for. Perhaps it reminds us of the Rolex DayDate, or perhaps it’s just not something you see everyday. Whichever way you put it, I think the MTP-1370L is a very good looking watch. A cohesive design, good 40/20 dimensions and a stunning jet-black dial. Homerun.

BUILD QUALITY

I must admit, it had me fooled. The Casio Day/Date is not a stainless steel watch. The case is presumably constructed from some sort of plated brass. That way, it looks very good in most scenarios, but it gets sort of a cheap glimmer under certain types of light. It also means that any scratch might end up going through the plating, revealing that disgusting brass underneath. These do not hold up very well over time, unless you’re especially careful.

It still feels good, though. The watch is not too heavy, nor too light, the crown feels good, and the second hand hits all the markers. Yes, Seiko, it’s actually possible.

MOVEMENT

Casio quartz movements are solid as rock. No complaints.

STRAP

These are available both on a black “leather” strap and a “steel” bracelet. Both of which are better off thrown away as soon as possible. Put this one on a proper leather strap or a NATO and you’ll thank yourself (and me, for suggesting it.)

X-FACTOR

A Casio, with a full weekday indicator? YES

At around 50$ I don’t think you can go wrong with this one. It’ll keep going for years, and if you’re somewhat careful with it, it’ll keep looking good as well.
